As someone who deeply cares about natural living, I learned about essential oils in 2013. They kept popping up on blogs I read, in DIY and cleaning recipes I wanted to try, and in conversations I had. With (at that time) a new baby at home, I was definitely on the quest to further eliminate the toxins in my home and find more natural ways to support my family’s overall wellness.
So, I started doing some research. Immediately, I was impressed with Young Living’s 20+ years of experience and research, their Seed to Seal® commitment, that they own their own farms and distilleries, their vision and mission, and the support, education, and community available to me as a part of Young Living.
I ordered my Premium Starter Kit in January of 2014. That purchase changed my family forever! I used all of my essential oils and my diffuser immediately and my family quickly started experiencing all of the amazing benefits (oh boy, I could tell you some stories!). Not a day has gone by since then that I haven’t used Young Living products in my home!
Young Living Essential Oils are something I’m so passionate about now. I really believe that these little bottles need to be in every single home! If you’re curious about essential oils and wondering how to support your family’s wellness naturally, check out all of the introductory information I have for you below. I hope you’ll be joining my oily family!
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are distilled from botanicals such as flowers, shrubs, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. Distillation techniques carefully maintain low pressure and low temperature to preserve the fragile constituents of essential oils. There are four main distillation methods: steam distillation, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, and cold pressing. The most common method (steam distillation) permeates the botanical with steam, drawing essential oils out of the raw plant matter.
Lastly, essential oils are nothing new (and they are well-researched). They have been used throughout history in many cultures for their health-supporting benefits. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Europeans, and Chinese have used them for centuries for health, beauty, fragrance, and other practices. There are also many references to essential oils in historical texts, which signifies their importance in history.
Why Should You Be Using Essential Oils?
In addition, each essential oil carries a scientifically measurable frequency (just like every living thing). Essential oils have the capacity to raise your body frequency. The more you are applying essentials to yourself, the higher your body frequency. The higher your body frequency, the greater the potential for better overall health.
Plus, essential oils carry an antioxidant value called an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score. In a nutshell, an ORAC score tells you the essential oil’s capacity to inhibit free radicals. What do you think of when you think of antioxidants? Blueberries? The ORAC score for blueberries is in the thousands. The ORAC score for Clove essential oil is in the millions!
How Do You Use Essential Oils?
One of our favorite ways to use essential oils is aromatically. Many of us have had a time where a smell triggers a memory – freshly baked bread, pine needles, or spring flowers can easily take you back to positive times in your life. Essential oils are the same!
Using essential oils aromatically is as easy as one, two, three:
- Place a couple of drops in the palm of your hand.
- Rub your hands together.
- Cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale deeply.
Diffusion is another great way to use essential oils aromatically. Diffusing purifies the air, makes your home smell good without chemicals, is great for respiratory support*, and is wonderful for stubborn spouses and crazy kids. Having more than one diffuser is great too!
Essential oils can also be applied to the skin. This is known as topical application. Topical application is a great way to support your skin because essential oils are easy to use and provide quick benefits. Some favorite places to apply essential oils topically are the wrists, behind the ears, on the neck, on the temples, on the stomach, and on the feet.
Some people choose to use essential oils internally by adding them to water or another liquid (make sure to use glass or stainless steel containers), placing them in a capsule, or taking one of Young Living’s oil-infused products.
Young Living’s line of Vitality dietary essential oils is specifically labeled for internal use. This labeling makes it easier for folks to know which essential oils to use aromatically/topically and which essential oils are for internal use – but they are the exact same therapeutic-grade essential oils, no matter what the label is!
However you choose to use essential oils, chances are someone else has tried that same use in the past. If you still don’t know where to start, rest assured that each essential oil is labeled with instructions for use.
Using Essential Oils Safely
Here are some important tips I want to make sure you don’t miss though:
- You should never place essential oils inside the ear.
- You should never place essential oils near or in the eyes. If you ever get essential oils in your eyes, do not rinse with water. That will drive the essential oil in. Instead, apply a fatty oil (coconut oil, olive oil, Young Living’s V-6 oil, etc) around the eye area for relief.
- Please learn about the proper methods and ratios for diluting essential oils.
- Some essential oils are more “hot” to the skin than others. Learning more about this and other sensitivity issues are important.
- Always read the essential oil labels for further information and usage.
What's So Special About Young Living?
Young Living is the only essential oil company with their own farms and, because of this, they offer a Seed to Seal® guarantee. Their proprietary Seed to Seal® process is the heart of their commitment to purity and providing essential oils free of synthetic chemicals.
Young Living is all about farming – beautiful and organic farming. They own thousands of acres of sustainable, organic farmland. They have multiple farms and distilleries around the world (no other company has that). Their farms are worldwide so that plants can grow in the climate they thrive in.
For example, the trees at Young Living’s Frankincense farm in Oman or the Ylang Ylang trees at their Ecuador farm in South America won’t grow here in the United States. They have to grow them there to reach their full potential. Young Living also has certified co-op and partner farms whose growing processes meet Young Living’s strict quality standards.
The key to producing therapeutic-grade essential oils is to preserve as many of the delicate compounds (constituents) within the essential oil as possible, so Young Living Essential Oils are distilled using steam distillation at a low pressure and at a low temperature. Their fragile constituents are easily destroyed otherwise. A cheap, perfume-grade essential oil is distilled at high pressure and at high temperatures and usually with chemical solvents. This yields an adulterated essential oil that can still be labeled 100% pure, as there’s no regulation.
There are no pesticides or chemicals used on Young Living’s plants. Even the weeds on the farms are removed with a hoe, by hand, or by killing them with steam. The distillation facilities are on-site to ensure perfect distillation timing, and testing is done on the plants for many days leading up to distillation to know they are at their prime for distilling. Young Living has both internal labs and third-party labs verify that international purity and potency standards are met and even surpassed.
Young Living loves for their members to be a part of the seed plantings and also the harvests and distillation of their essential oils. Anyone can visit a Young Living farm! How’s that for transparency?
In 2015, Young Living had one billion dollars in sales and grew to 1.5 million members! Those numbers are a testament to their incredible products, credibility, and member support.
Young Living’s vision is to bring their essential oils to every home in the world. Their mission is to “foster a community of healing and discovery while inspiring individuals to wellness, purpose, and abundance”. That’s a vision and a mission my family can get behind, and Young Living is a company I fully trust.
11 Essential Oils You Should Never Be Without
#1: Peppermint Vitality
Peppermint Vitality promotes healthy intestinal and bowel function.* It supports normal digestion.* It also may support performance during exercise. It has a crisp, cool, refreshing flavor. You can add Peppermint Vitality to food or water or add a few drops to a vegetable capsule.
TIP: To make Peppermint Brownies, add five drops of Peppermint Vitality to a 9×13 pan of your favorite brownies.
#2: Lemon Vitality
Lemon Vitality essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind of the fruit (meaning that the essential oil doesn’t contain the acid found in the pulp). Drinking water with Lemon Vitality tastes wonderful and is much easier on the enamel of your teeth than squeezing a lemon into your water. It can be used in beverages, savory foods, sweet foods, or placed in a vegetable capsule. Lemon Vitality includes 68% limonene (a powerful antioxidant).
TIP: Add several drops of Lemon Vitality to your favorite fruit dip recipe.
#3: DiGize Vitality
DiGize Vitality is a blend of Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli essential oils. It supports normal digestion and can be taken in water, honey, or a vegetable capsule.* DiGize Vitality can be taken with meals along with enzymes like Essentialzymes-4 to support a wellness regimen.
TIP: Use DiGize Vitality as a dietary supplement in water when traveling abroad.
#4: Thieves Vitality
Thieves Vitality is a blend of Lemon, Clove, Eucalyptus Radiata (which may help maintain a healthy respiratory system*), Cinnamon Bark, and Rosemary essential oils. It supports healthy immune function and overall wellness, as well as oral health.* Thieves Vitality can be added (just a drop) to a cup of tea or a glass of apple juice.
TIP: Wondering where the name “Thieves” came from? Thieves was inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals they used while robbing the dead and dying. In exchange for a more lenient punishment, they revealed what they used. Thieves essential oil blend is highly regarded for its ability to support the immune system.*
#5: Copaiba Vitality
Copaiba Vitality supports the body’s natural response to injury or irritation. It promotes wellness and was traditionally used to aid digestion.* Copaiba Vitality may be an important part of a daily health regimen.
TIP: Mix Copaiba Vitality with honey and warm water to create a tea.
Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. Frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it.
Frankincense can be applied or diffused for calming, relaxing, or emotional well-being. It’s useful for massage after activity. It may help smooth the appearance of healthy-looking skin. Frankincense includes the naturally occurring constituent alpha-pinene and is high in sesquiterpenes.
TIP: Add Frankincense to your facial moisturizer or body lotion.
Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils. It’s also the most adulterated of all essential oils, so it is very important to know what you are getting. It takes 170 pounds of plant material to make one pound of Lavender essential oil. Young Living adds nothing to that pure Lavender essential oil, so the aroma may be different than typical “lavender” body care products, which often contain synthetics for a sweeter fragrance.
Lavender essential oil is sometimes called the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils because it can be used for so many things! It assists the body when adapting to occasional stress, relaxes and calms for restful sleep, soothes and cleanses healthy skin, and soothes occasional minor skin irritation. It can also be diffused for a comforting and calming aroma.
TIP: Add a few drops of Lavender to Epsom salts for a relaxing nighttime bath.
Purification is a blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Myrtle essential oils. It freshens and cleans the air rather than covering up odors like chemical sprays or plug-in air fresheners.
Purification soothes and cleanses common skin irritations and occasional blemishes. It’s a great non-toxic cleaning choice. Add it to your laundry soap or to wool dryer balls for fresh-smelling laundry.
TIP: Apply Purification topically to enjoy summer evenings outdoors annoyance-free.
PanAway is a blend of Helichrysum, Wintergreen, Clove, and Peppermint essential oils. It can be applied to the skin for a soothing aromatic experience. PanAway also helps to soothe occasional muscle tension and discomfort.
TIP: Add PanAway to one of Young Living’s massage oils to provide comforting warmth to muscles after exercise or daily activities.
RC is a blend of Cypress, Spruce, and three types of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globulus, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Eucalyptus Citriodora) essential oils. It can be diluted and applied to the chest, neck, and throat areas. You can also massage it on to your feet before bedtime or diffuse it for an uplifting and invigorating aroma.
TIP: Rub RC on your feet or chest before exercise to uplift.
#11: Stress Away
Stress Away is a blend of Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Ocotea, and Lavender essential oils.
Stress Away helps combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life. It also promotes wellness, helps to reduce mental rigidity and restores equilibrium, encourages relaxation, and helps to reduce occasional nervous tension. Stress Away can be diffused for a relaxing, calming, and comforting atmosphere.
TIP: Add a roller fitment to the Stress Away bottle and roll Stress Away on your neck, wrists, and over your heart.
