Summer is right around the corner and I, for one, am thrilled. I wouldn’t say summer is my favorite season (I’m a fall girl), but I understand its appeal a lot more since my son was born. My boy needs to run and jump and be crazy – and he needs to do all that outside and not in my house where he’ll break something. So these days I welcome the lovely weather and the long days full of sunlight (and the long nights full of sleep because he’s plumb tuckered out!).
A lot of people are thinking about essential oils in the winter and how to use them to improve their wellness during that time of year. But don’t forget to get oily in the summer too! All of the essential oils mentioned below will help you love this summer a little bit more. Whether it’s because you won’t be dealing with outside annoyances, your skin will be happy, or everyone’s emotions will be dealt with, there’s an essential oil in this list for you to try this summer.
NOTE: Don’t forget that citrus essential oils are photosensitive and could cause skin irritation if applied right before sun exposure. So, if you’re headed out in the sun, make sure to apply citrus essential oils (and blends that contain citrus essential oils) only to covered areas of your body.
#1: Citronella Essential Oil
Citronella essential oil has a slight citrus scent. It’s well-known for its use in outdoor candles, sprays, lotions, and other camping and outdoor essentials.
Suggested Summertime Use: Apply topically before and during outdoor activities. Use as an alternative to deodorant (combine with Tea Tree essential oil for added strength). Apply topically to refresh and moisturize skin. Make a DIY Citronella Floating Candle Bowl to create a peaceful ambiance and pleasant aroma during outdoor parties.
#2: Purification Essential Oil
Purification essential oil is made up of six essential oils. Citronella, Lavandin, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Myrtle, and Tea Tree work together to create a refreshing, bright scent.
Suggested Summertime Use: Apply topically before and during outdoor activities. Add a few drops to your sweaty laundry for a great-smelling boost. Place a few drops on cotton balls and stash them wherever stale, stinky odors live (the car, closets and drawers, air vents, shoes, etc).
#3: Peppermint Essential Oil
When the weather heats up, Peppermint essential oil is a refreshing tool for use during all of your summer outdoor activities. Used topically, Peppermint essential oil creates a cool, tingling sensation on the skin.
Suggested Summertime Use: Wet a lightweight cotton towel and put 5-8 drops on a towel. Place the towel on the back of your neck, under a mesh cap, or down your back. Or you can add 15 drops to 4 oz of water in a spray bottle and mist your skin (avoiding the eyes). If you’re going to be on a boat this summer, don’t forget to bring your bottle of Peppermint to sniff while you’re on the water!
#4: Cedarwood Essential Oil
Cedarwood essential oil has a warm, woodsy aroma that creates a comforting, uplifting experience.
Suggested Summertime Use: Enjoy the outdoors annoyance-free by blending Cedarwood with other essential oils, such as Citronella, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Myrtle, Clove, or Lemongrass. Place a few drops in your shampoo and conditioner for shinier-looking hair. Smooth skin by adding Cedarwood to your favorite lotions and skin care products.
#5: Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium essential oil is produced from the steam distillation of Geranium’s fragrant flowers and leaves and has an aroma that encourages peaceful, spiritual feelings. Geranium essential oil is a popular choice to help smooth and tone skin.
Suggested Summertime Use: Add 4-5 drops to a spray bottle with 2 oz of water. Spritz lightly over your skin for a refreshing, revitalizing effect. Is your makeup melting in the summer heat? Make this DIY Makeup Setting Spray.
#6: Carrot Seed Essential Oil
Produced from distillation of the seeds of the wild carrot plant, Carrot Seed essential oil has a mildly sweet aroma with earthy, herbaceous notes. It’s a must-have essential oil for sunny summer days.

Suggested Summertime Use: Staying in a hotel this summer? Help kids (and yourself!) relax in a new place by diffusing in your hotel room at night. Got a long car ride? Diffuse in your car (or put a few drops on some cotton balls and stuff in your air vents) for a moment of quiet. Peace & Calming does exactly what it says, so pull it out and diffuse it or apply it topically this summer whenever you could use some “peace” or “calming”.
BONUS: LavaDerm Cooling Mist
LavaDerm Cooling Mist contains Lavender essential oil and aloe to soothe and rejuvenate overexposed skin.
Suggested Summertime Use: Spray on your skin after a long day of outdoor activities. Repeat every 10-15 minutes as needed.
